Live With Regis & Kelly (Wednesday, June 18th, 2008)

Steve Carrell from NBC's The Office was a guest on this morning's Live With Regis & Kelly to promote his new film Get Smart, which opens Friday, June 20th.

During the interview, Regis Philbin brought up both last year's Office Convention (held in Scranton) and the original idea to use Scranton, Pennsylvania as the location of the fictional Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company.

Carrell stated that he heard from his fellow actors on the shows that the convention was incredible, and he himself definitely plans to attend the next Office Convention. He also stated that the producers of the hit show didn't choose Scranton, PA as a locale to make fun of the city--he said they were simply looking for an "honest town" and "a normal place where normal people work."

Kudos, Steve!

The Office will return on Thursday, September 25th at 9 PM for a one-hour season premiere.

Chelsea Lately (Friday, December 7, 2007)

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a local reference or a simple "plug" but, being that it was heard on the only television channel I ever watch, I thought I'd include it.

Anyone who knows me knows I am a HUGE fan of E! Entertainment Television. The E! True Hollywood Story, E! News, The Daily 10, The Girls Next Door and MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE The Soup -- what more can you ask for?

Last night, I was watching a repeat of E's new late-night half-hour talk show Chelsea Lately starring Chelsea Handler (the episodes featured guests Bridget and Kendra from The Girls Next Door). Towards the end of her panel discussion that begins each show (usually with 3 guest comedians), Chelsea said, "By the way, I'll be at the F.M. Kirby Center in Wilkes-Barre (she pronounced it Wilkes-BARRA) this Saturday night and if you can't make it...then suck it."

Also of note, a few days after The Office Convention in Scranton, The Office's Melora Hardin (Jan) was a guest on Chelsea Lately. During the interview, Chelsea asked her, "Wasn't there some sort of convention you just got back from?" Though they discussed the convention for five minutes, neither Chelsea nor Melora mentioned Scranton by name.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show, November 27, 2006

It's always interesting when you're watching a talk show and a guest or audience member happens to mention that he/she is from Scranton, PA.

Today's Ellen DeGeneres Show, dubbed "the celebrity look-a-like show," featured videos of viewers who resembled several Hollywood stars. Audience members were asked to guess which celebrity these videotaped viewers looked like. One videotaped female audience member said she hailed from Scranton, PA and stated that people have told her she looks like Michael J. Fox.

An interesing reference, isn't it?
